All About the Rose Peony

The rose peony is a gorgeous flower that is reminiscent of one of America’s favorite flowers. The rose and the peony come together in a gorgeous cluster of a flower, many of which are hybrid in their shades, and full of life. This gorgeous flower that is native to China, Tibet and Siberia has been grown for decades all around the world, and are ready to provide you with a long season of fragrance.

When to Plant the Rose Peony

The best time to plant the rose peony, is really dependent upon your climate. The standard time to plant this flower is during the dormant spell of the winter season. The flowers will actually bloom in early summer, and have quite a long life. This type of peony doesn’t seem to do well in extremely hot climates, or in a rain forest area where it’s extremely hot and humid. These flowers have done extremely well and are highly favored in one of the native countries; China, where it has been grown for over 2500 years.

How and Where to Plant the Rose Peony

Your rose peony bushes will always do best in a nutrient rich soil. It can be neutral to slightly alkaline, and if you aren’t sure you can have it tested by a landscaping company.  As always, with most plants adding natural compost is very healthy for them. Manure is typically the best, and with this flower manure from fowl is the preferred compost. In addition, you can add lime to these plants if you have it available, and if not you can look online and find out where you can get it shipped from. You will find that because these plants are so long lasting, it is worth the effort that you put into them up front.

When planting your peonies, you need to have them in an open space where they can receive light well, and can be guarded from harsh winds whether from a thunderstorm or just strong winds in general. They need to be spaced far enough apart that you can see a tiny space about the size of an eye in between your flowers.

If you are in extremely dry climate, or if you are experiencing a severe dry spell then it’s best to water them maybe twice a day. The best time to water your plants is usually either early morning or late in the evening, so the water won’t be absorbed so quickly. When your peony plants are blooming, then they will still need water daily, but not as much as they do when it’s dry.

To keep your plants healthy, you can add more compost periodically, or compost as necessary. This will add nutrients to your plants, and enrich the soil which feeds your plants. Much like their rose plant counterparts, the rose peony feeds positively off of bone meal. Bone meal is crushed bone that can be sprinkled around your plants and will aid in enriching the soil. Roses are also a higher maintenance plant, so their growing needs are very similar. Mulch is also another component that you can add to your soil, whether new or old it’s extremely beneficial, and can still be added along with the compost or fertilizer.

Pruning is a great way to take care of your rose peony bushes as well. Pruning is essential to help generate new growth, and to get rid of any dead blooms that may cause the stem to rot. For newer plants, cutting away at the stem isn’t necessary, but once the plants are about four years of age, you can cut them up to two thirds of the way. For a decorative touch, you can even pick some blooms and put them in a vase, and they will bud.
